ACTION R/C Electronics

Products List May 2008 (supercedes previous ACTion issues)

ACTION R/C Electronic Speed Controllers and Switchers are fitted with  HITEC/JR type servo leads. A Futaba plug shell moulding is also supplied together with a diagram showing how to change them over.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ACTION ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLERS ARE NOT FITTED WITH BEC (BATTERY ELIMINATOR CIRCUITRY). P52 and P68 operate from the receiver battery anyway, while Condor 2 can be modified very simply to do so. P79/80/81/93 will require either a separate receiver battery, an ACTion P19 BEC unit or a P92 Distribution Board (which is fitted with a 5v BEC regulator).

All ACTion ESCs are fully proportional i.e. they run up to full speed in both Forward and Reverse directions. They do not require any neutral/end-point calibration or other adjustments.

The ABS cases supplied with our electronics are uncut but are easily cut and drilled with normal modelling tools.

Most units only require a screwdriver and wire to install them.

ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLERS

P52A micro 1A Miniature Microcomputer soft start SPEED CONTROLLER

Micro is a highly efficient little relayless, two IC speed controller for very small motors. Suitable for use with any standard R/C outfit, it can run from 4.8 Volt Nicad or 6 Volt Dry receiver batteries from where it gets the power for the motor (it plugs in like a servo) It has a maximum current of 1 Amp. In any event, it is self-protecting with ‘Failsafe’, ‘overtemperature’ and ‘overcurrent ‘shut down (not reverse voltage). In ‘stop’ condition the current drops to a ‘Sleep’ value which is very low. It will cope with a wide range of small, efficient motors. Many radio boat modellers are using 5v cassette recorder motors, and it is ideal for them.  ACTion motors M5 or M7 are also ideal. The kit version of P52A is very easy to build. Overall size 40mm x 27mm x 17mm.

P68A pico 1A Tiny Microcomputer, linear acceleration SPEED CONTROLLER

This uses the same circuit design as the Micro 1 in a much smaller case but with similar characteristics. Pico is the smallest controller ACTion has ever produced. P93 HIGH-POWER MULTI CONTROLLER

A truly multi-function module, this unit will do ANY of the following jobs:

ESC – Conventional Electronic Speed Controller which will operate motors from 6v to 24v battery supply. Normal Maximum current is 10A continuous but this can be increased to 20A with upgraded heat-sinks or water-cooling. Select 100% for normal ESC mode, or choose 50% or 25% modes to reduce the peak output; this enables you to “tame” an over-enthuiastic motor for precision steering, or to use a low-voltage motor on a higher voltage supply e.g. 12v motor on 24v.

Thruster – Drives a bow thruster, winch, deck lift, cargo doors and hatches – in fact any application where a motor is required to run in each direction from one transmitter channel. This output is also selectable, so you can operate a standard commercial 6v or 7.2v bow thruster from either 6v, 7.2v, 12v or 24v supply – just by moving a couple of tiny on-board switches.

Switcher – A conventional 10A twin switch with selectable latching or momentary operation on either output.

Mode selection is via on-board 4-way DIL switch.

Unit is supplied in either kit or ready-built format, with full instructions and wiring diagrams for basic installations. Case size 74 x 50 x 28mm. Screwdriver connections.

P93M LIMIT SWITCH MODULE

A small module comprising an 8-pin header with leads and micro-switches which plugs into the P93 DIL switch socket and provides travel-limit switching of motorised functions. Use it to stop your winch, deck-lift, cargo hatch, doors etc at their extremes of travel when run from a P93 (just like an automatic garage door).

NEW FOR 2008!!

P94 DUAL ESC/MIXER MULTI-CONTROLLER

P94 is an all-purpose twin motor controller. It has been designed to operate from a 6v to 24v supply, with a continuous current capacity of 20A for each motor. It can be operated as two independent speed controllers; as combined twin motor ESCs and mixer, in either 50% or 100% mix (both adjustable) or to control bow and stern thrusters. All modes are selected using the on-board DIL switches.  ONLY TWO CHANNEL R/C IS NEEDED for mixer operation.. In thruster mode, the output can be adjusted to suit any commercial thruster units if you are using a higher-voltage supply. By using a blip of the rudder stick, the skipper can select whether the thrusters operate in either “Spin” or “Slew” mode. The unit is supplied built and tested, with five pages of coloured wiring diagrams, full installation and operating instructions. Case size approx 73mm x 50mm x 28mm, plus heat-sink tabs.

MOTOR MIXERS

P40C MARINE MOTOR MIXER for 2 or 3 motors

This very clever unit uses a microcomputer to control the differential speed of twin motor units in conjunction with the steering/rudder position, in that it will automatically slow down the motor on the inside of a turn when a steering command is given. It has a specialised ABS case 45.5mm x 32mm x 20mm with onboard plug-in connectors for the two outer speed controllers/motors, one centre speed controller/motor (if used) and the steering servo, thus eliminating the need to purchase extra ‘Y’ leads. It requires one speed controller for each motor and connects into the receiver Motor and Steering outputs via marked leads. A very comprehensive installation and set-up instruction leaflet is included. This is probably the best marine mixer yet; ask a user. It has been ACTion’s best selling electronic unit over 2007. E-Mail us for a comprehensive guide to Twin-motor installations and the use of Marine Motor Mixers.

P82 MICRO MOTOR MIXER for 4.8/6 Volt models (suitable for use only with 2 x  P52 or P68 ESCs)

This tiny mixer uses a similar version of the software in the P40C motor mixer. It will control the differential speed of twin motor units in conjunction with the steering/rudder position in that it will automatically slow down the motor on the inside of a turn when a steering command is given. Apart from the smaller size, the main difference is that P82 feeds the power for the motors directly through to the ESCs from the receiver connections i.e. the whole model requires only one battery pack to power everything. It has an ABS case - 34mm x 24.5mm x 16mm,  with onboard plug-in connectors for two outer motors and the steering servo, eliminating the need to purchase a ‘Y’ lead.

P43 SINGLE RELAY SWITCHER

This little non-latching switch requires a channel but will switch 1 Amp continuous and an in-rush of 2 Amps. About the size of a matchbox, it can be used to switch sound simulators, small motors, relays or solenoids - in fact anything within its current/voltage range. Pre-setable switching point at one side or the other of neutral stick. Size 41mm x 31mm x 20mm.  Will handle voltage up to 24 Volts. Screwdriver connection.

P44A UNIVERSAL TWIN SWITCHER (Latching/Non-latching)

This is an update of our most popular switcher. It is micro-controller driven and provides two separate switched circuits from only one proportional R/C channel. Each of the two relays can be driven as either Latching (Memory) switches or Non-Latching (Momentary) switches; these functions are selected by a miniature switch on the circuit board. 1 Amp maximum load per Switch. For the control of most of the auxiliary functions that you have on a boat. Case size only 53.5mm x 37.5mm x 23mm. Screwdriver connection.

P62 QUADSWITCH with 4 x LATCHING RELAY OUTPUTS

This microcomputer unit will add four switch functions to a spare proportional channel. It can also be used to “piggy-back” a 2-channel installation to provide these switch functions. In this case it is plugged into the steering channel and it gives a slowed-down steering function plus four switch functions.  1 Amp maximum load per Switch. Case size is 63 x 43 x 25mm, and connections are via screw-terminals.

P69 pico TWIN SWITCHER

Tiny-size R/C switch. It is micro-controller driven and provides two separate switched circuits from only one proportional R/C channel. Power for the loads comes directly from the receiver battery pack (4.8v – 6v). Each of the two outputs can be driven as either Latching (Memory) or Non-Latching (Momentary) switches; these functions are selected by a miniature switch on the circuit board.  Switches up to 300 mA (0.3A) max load per switch. For the control of micro-horn or micro-whistle, micro smoke generator, lights etc.

Case size only 34mm x 24.5mm x 16mm. Simple solder connection to loads.

P91 HI-LOAD TWIN SWITCHER

The P91 Hi-Load Twin-switch will operate two completely independent circuits from one R/C channel. Both circuits can be set to switch at any point on the Tx stick from just to the side of neutral to full-throw, and either can be selected as latching or non-latching. If that’s not versatile enough for you, then this little device will handle a continuous current of 10Amps (peak 20A) on each circuit. It has been designed especially to operate motorised functions such as fire-monitors, bilge pumps and twin-motor bow-thrusters. Run it from your throttle output on a Y-lead and have that third warship or MTB motor kick-in at ¾ throttle – easy! It will, of course, also switch “conventional” loads such as lights and sound simulators. P91 is supplied only in ready-built form. Case size is 63 x 43 x 25mm, and connections are via screw-terminals.

P22 SERVO SWINGER

This simple off-air servo driver works by generating the standard +ve signal pulse from a timer circuit. It uses a separate battery box with 4 x AA alkaline or NiCad/NiMH cells, or you might replace this with a 4.8v battery pack such as the one from your RC gear.  This means that you no longer have to scrabble around looking for your Tx, a spare receiver (with the correct crystal fitted….) and a wiring harness to set up your new model or check a suspect servo. The 1.5 mS neutral is standard for practically all modern RC systems. It is such a useful item for testing and setting up servos, RC switchers and electronic speed controllers that you’ll wonder how you managed without it. Battery voltage 4.8v (4 x NiCad/NiMH) to 6v (4 x AA Alkaline). Case size 64mm x 44mm x 25mm with screws. Input via a rotary knob; Output via male servo lead. 4 x AA size battery box, clip and servo connector are supplied with both the ready-built and kit versions. Batteries are not included.

P38 RF SIGNAL METER for 27/35/40MHz TRANSMITTERS

This unit clips onto the transmitter aerial and monitors the actual transmitted RF power, giving a much better indication of the state of a transmitter’s output than the relatively crude battery meters fitted into most Tx units. The unit does not require its own batteries. Can be used with AM and FM transmitters operating on 27MHz, 35MHz or 40MHz. Full PCB kit with 200uA signal meter, nylon-coated clips and case. Not available built (it has only six pcb components). Full building and setting-up instructions and diagrams are included.

P49 MORSE/ALDIS SOUNDER/FLASHER

This is a microcomputer-driven project. It produces genuine MORSE and ALDIS messages, programmed in consultation with the Surface Warship Association. It can be used for MORSE only; ALDIS only, or alternate MORSE and ALDIS. There is an automatic 30 second dead-time before each message, so the unit can be left switched on throughout the model’s operation time. The sounder which is provided produces a piercing MORSE sound which can be heard over a considerable distance. The ALDIS drive will power a bulb up to 2A (which is a very high-power bulb). The unit will run from 6 to 12 Volt batteries and uses very little more than the bulb current.  Screwdriver connection.

P59 R/C MASTER - SERVO TEST AND R/C CALIBRATION UNIT

With an 18-pin PIC microcomputer at its heart, this clever unit will test and exercise servos, switchers or Speed Controllers without having the R/C equipment on. It will also check the centre-stick timing value of your transmitter sticks; run-in motors via ESC. Output display is via two 10-segment LED bar-graph units, not meaningless numbers! Powered by a receiver battery pack (4.8 Volts) or 4 x 1.5v alkaline cells (batteries not included).  Due to the amount of work required to fit this unit into its case, it is only available in kit form. P92 POWER DISTRIBUTION BOARD

The P92 Power Distribution Board provides a neat solution to “Rat’s Nest” wiring when multiple units are installed in a R/C model boat. It takes the power from the main battery - which can be either Sealed Lead Acid, Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal-Hydride - and routes it to five separate pairs of terminals PLUS a regulated nominal 5v supply to power your receiver, servos and other Rx-driven devices. The outputs are divided into two groups of three, both of which are fused at 15A, while there is an overall 25A fuse to protect the whole board. P92 uses a very high-quality epoxy-glass laminated board with an extra-thick copper land. The screw terminals are rated to 28A and have rising-clamp connections which will take up to 2.5 sq mm cables. It was designed and built especially for the job. The unit is supplied either in kit form, or ready-built and checked. Both include TWO FULL sets of fuses, a universal servo/BEC lead and approx 330mm each of Red and Black 2.5mm multi-strand PVC-covered cable to make the connection to your battery. Battery connectors are not included. Board size is 64mm x 70mm. M3 fixing holes (4) provided. Screwdriver connection.

P95 INDICATOR FUSE BOARDS

P95 is a simple fuse-holder with screw-terminal connections for the cables in from your electronic speed controller and the outputs to your main drive motor. It has the addional feature of a bi-colour LED which gives a visual indication of the direction of current from the ESC i.e. it glows Green in one direction and Red in the other. Maximum current rating is 25A per board. P95/1 is the single motor version and is approx 63mm x 15mm. M3 fixing holes are provided. P95/2 and P95/3 are respectively the twin- and triple- motor installation versions. Supplied with two blade fuses per board (10A and 15A).
