Welcome to the ACTion Website!

About the business:

ACTion was started by Craig Talbot in 1994. Craig was an enthusiastic modeller, primarily interested in boats and trucks, who wanted a particular sound effect which he couldn’t find in any shop. Being a skilled electronics engineer he set to and designed one. This proved to be very successful and was soon in demand from other modellers, so Craig began to expand his range of sound simulators. When he was made redundant from his job he was persuaded to build ACTion into a full-time business. Sadly he passed away in May 2007 but not before he saw his friend Dave Milbourn take over the business.

Dave is perhaps best known for his design and drawing work on the most recent Model Slipway kits, but he has been in and around the model trade for a long time – having designed the original Precedent Huntsman 31 in 1972. He and his wife Liz pride themselves on the quality and speed of their service – just like Craig, they like to get it right.

About the products:

The ACTion range includes seven electronic speed controllers (from 1A to 20A); three motor/steering mixers; several different sound effects units e.g. foghorn, steam whistle, ASDIC,  destroyer “whoop whoop”; R/C switchers from one to four functions; bulb-flashing devices and engine sound simulators which are coupled to the speed controller and whose “revs” increase with engine speed. Many of these units are microprocessor-based and most can be purchased either ready-built or in kit form. Other items such as motors, servos, mini-receivers, speakers and smoke-generators are also stocked. There is a fixed-charge repair service for ACTion units and this fee can be credited against the cost of a new unit if the old one proves to be unserviceable.

NEW PRODUCTS:-

IT’S FINALLY HERE!!

P94 –This is a multi-purpose twin-motor controller which can be operated as two independent ESCs and as a combined motor mixer with two ESCs in the same case……. We reckon this feature alone will put it firmly on the wish-list of just about any modeler building a twin-engined scale workboat. Using simple on-board DIL switches, it will also operate two thrusters – bow and stern – to work either in opposite directions to rotate the model or in the same direction to slew it sideways. A quick blip of the Tx rudder stick is used to select which mode the skipper wants to use. See one on our new demo board at this year’s shows or E-Mail us for a PDF data-sheet. This unit makes two MFA 850’s sound really good!

Now available from stock:

Latest line is 22mm Velcro “Dots”.  These are self-adhesive, coin-sized pieces of the famous fabric hook-and-loop system which many modelers use to fasten electronic units into their model’s hull. We now have these in packets of 8 pairs for a whole £1. Stick some on your next order (Oops! Sorry….).

P95/1, 95/2 and 95/3 Indicator Fuse Boards – A range of in-line fuse-boards for installation between motors and speed controllers, to complement the highly successful P92 and the fabulous new P94. Each unit combines a fuse-holder, 28A-rated input/output screw terminal connector blocks and a bi-coloured LED which gives a visual indication of the current flowing from your ESC to the motor. It glows Green when the motor runs in one direction and Red when it runs in reverse. Three version are available to cater for single-, twin- and triple- motor installations. Two fuses per board are supplied.

P22 Servo Swinger – This little unit will operate a servo, electronic speed controller or R/C switcher  without the need for a Tx or Rx. Sets up your steering and servo-operated auxiliary devices at the turn of a knob. Also ideal for testing servos and running-in motors (just connect one to an ESC and run it at slow speed). Both the kit and ready-built units are supplied complete with a 4 x AA-size battery box and clip/leads, and a universal servo lead and connector. These are flying off the shelf and everyone who’s bought one has said that it’s saved them so much time and trouble that they didn’t know how they managed without one. How can you resist for a tenner?

P92 – A “5+1”-way Power Distribution Board with on-board 1A BEC – Takes the power from your main battery (6v to 12v) and routes it to five separate pairs of terminals PLUS a low drop-out regulator to supply 5v to your receiver and servos. Two groups of terminals each fused at 15A, and an overall 25A rating (total load). Makes wiring multiple electronic units a doddle. THIS IS OUR FASTEST-SELLING UNIT. We now stock suitable replacement fuses @ £1/Pkt of 5, in 3A, 5A, 10A, 15A, 20A and 25A ratings.

P91 – Hi-Load Twin Switch, with adjustable switching points and selectable latching or non-latching action on each function. This will run one or two separate loads of up to 10A each from the same R/C channel, and has been designed especially for motorized applications e.g. fire monitors, bilge pumps, twin-motor bow thrusters. Run it from the throttle command via a Y-lead and kick-start that third motor on your MTB at ¾ throttle – easy! It will, of course, also handle lighting circuits like a conventional relay-equipped switcher………and in case you were wondering, 10A is equivalent to 160 x 6v Grain of Wheat bulbs.

P93 – High-power Multi Controller – This is ACTion’s most versatile device yet. Designed by Dr Tim Fawcett, the P93 can be configured as a 6v to 24v x 10A electronic speed controller (20A with additional cooling) OR a bi-directional switcher to run one motor in both directions, making it ideal for single-motor bow thrusters, working winches, anchors, cranes, hoists, davits, sliding cargo hatches, aircraft carrier deck-lifts etc OR a Hi-load power switch with the same features as the P91. The motor output voltage can be varied to suit different types of motors e.g. Robbe or Graupner bow-thrusters. Mode selection is done via a simple set of switches on the PCB, so you need only buy one P93 to perform any of these functions.  Will handle currents of 10A continuous and run on power supplies up to 24V. Tim has also added a utility to the software which, in conjunction with a little PCB plug and two small, pre-wired microswitches (P93M), will allow the fitting of limit switches to stop a driven motor from over-running at each end of its required travel – “just like your garage door, m’lud”!

NEW SERVICE – In preparation for launching our new website, Dave has been getting square eyes at the PC screen, drawing a set of full-coloured graphics for just about all of out units. These show not only the units as they appear “in the flesh”, but have many very useful wiring diagrams and other information. They are all in the universal Acrobat PDF format, so if you want some more data on any of our ESCs and switchers – or you need to know how to fit lights, bells, whistles etc to your new project - then send us an E-Mail. We may already have the right diagram done.
